What Older Adults Actually Want from Technology

The benefits of AI for active older adults aren’t found in flashy gadgets, but in human-centric solutions. Research from the PAN Foundation shows that roughly 75% of older adults say regularly talking to a friend or companion would help them feel more connected.
Technology shouldn’t feel like a digital babysitter or a surveillance tool. As older adults, we want:
- Independence: Tools that help us stay in our own homes longer.
- Cognitive Engagement: Something that keeps our minds sharp and the stories flowing.
- Simplicity: No tutorials, no software updates, and no troubleshooting.
These aren’t technical requirements; they’re human ones. We want a service that fits into our day, not something that forces us to sit at a desk or squint at a tablet. We did that when we were younger and working and we’re happy to leave that behind.
From “Hey Siri” to “Good Morning”
Think of the difference between a stranger at an information desk and a friend who works the counter at your local coffee shop, library, or community center.
Siri is the information desk. You ask, “What’s the weather?” and Siri tells you. Then, it immediately forgets you exist. It’s a one-off transaction.
An AI companion is more like the coffee shop friend. It uses the same underlying technology of voice recognition and language processing, but it’s designed for ongoing relationships rather than one-time commands. It remembers you.
When the AI companion calls you, it might remember that you were going to the doctor yesterday and ask how it went. It might remember that your grandson has a hockey game this weekend and help you find the score. It doesn’t care in the human sense, but, because it’s a sophisticated program, it notices and can share relevant information with specialists who are trained to recognize subtle shifts that may indicate shifts in our cognitive or physical health. The AI companion isn’t meant to replace human friends, but it does provide a consistent, reliable presence that is always ready to listen and bridge the gap between a cold tool and a warm interaction.
No App. No Wi-Fi. No Problem.
We all love hanging out with our grandkids, but who wants to spend the whole time with them getting IT support? The solution is surprisingly retro: the telephone.
My AI Companions operate via a standard phone call or text message, removing every traditional barrier to entry. It can be accessed on any phone, whether it is a brand-new smartphone or a reliable landline.
- No Wi-Fi? No problem. It even works on a landline or a basic flip phone.
- No App? You don’t have to download a thing or remember a login.
- No Complicated Learning Curve? If you can answer the phone and talk about your day, you’ve already aced the training course.
This isn’t a high-tech burden; it’s a high-touch service. For your caregiver, it provides peace of mind that you are engaging your brain daily. For you, the older adult, it’s a chance to share a story or a laugh without feeling like you are operating heavy machinery.
Built With Older Adults, Not For Us
This new wave of AI isn’t just tech looking for a problem to solve; it’s a response to a documented health need. This technology is being developed in partnership with the older adults who actually use it.
Our team is guided by experts like Dr. Karen Fortuna, a Dartmouth professor and our Chief Science Officer who is a leading researcher focused on co-design in digital peer support and the role of technology in recovery. She shares:
Co-design is a partnership in research that promotes equal decision making authority in all aspects of the research process. The goal is to ensure that AI remains a tool for patient empowerment and we believe that the most valuable insights and greatest discoveries come from the people who are most likely to use the technology.
Are You Ready to Try My AI Companion?
It’s important to be clear: an AI companion is not human and it is not meant to take the place of humans in your life. An ethically created AI should never pretend to have a childhood, a physical body, or human feelings. It is, however, a reliable, knowledgeable, and incredibly patient conversationalist who is free to talk to you at any time (even at 2 am, when you are awake and everybody else is asleep!)
The gap between where we are and the future of AI is much smaller than you think. In fact, you’re probably already there. You just need to pick up the phone.
