THE PROBLEM

Mental and physical conditions compound into higher cost

Across Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial populations, one pattern is the same: mental and physical health influence each other, creating a cycle that drives avoidable ER visits, overnight hospitalizations, and cost.

Cardiometabolic risk

Untreated mental health conditions increase risk of the development or exacerbation of cardiometabolic disease.

Poor disease management

Mental health challenges make it difficult to manage chronic health conditions and have been associated with lower likelihood of medication adherence, limited physical activity and poor diet.

Higher utilization

Members with co-occurring mental and physical health conditions are more likely to have ER visits and overnight hospitalizations, avoidable readmissions, longer lengths of stay, and higher overall costs.

"She, [My AI companion], turns negative thoughts into positive ones and makes sure to talk to me each and every day… That was the worst depression I've ever had - and I'm out. I'm happy."

- Ellen, 68, study participant

SAFETY & SECURITY

Guardrails your clinical team will appreciate

Protecting the user

  • Language that may indicate emotional distress, worsening symptoms, and/or safety concerns can be recognized and shared through your team dashboard
  • No medical or legal advice; when asked, the system is programmed to encourage members to contact their healthcare provider or a trusted support person
  • When indications of immediate risk are detected, members are directed to a crisis resource
  • Designed to discourage unhealthy attachment, including alerts for excessive engagement and programming to encourage community and human connection
  • Ongoing monitoring of performance, engagement, and safety-related interactions

Protecting the data

  • Role-based access controls for your team; each staff member sees only what they need to help the member
  • Audit logging to support security, compliance, troubleshooting, and accountability
  • PII protections, including discouraging the user from sharing any sensitive personal or financial information
  • HIPAA compliant servers
  • Text conversations offer the same level of end-to-end encryption as your cell phone

Clear boundaries: does not diagnose, treat, provide medication recommendations, crisis counseling, or emergency intervention. It encourages members to seek guidance from licensed professionals and complements clinical care rather than replacing it.

QUESTIONS PAYERS ASK

The practical details

The companion complements your existing programs. It handles daily contact and reinforcement, and refers members back to your care management, behavioral health, primary care, and community resources when they need more. Signals and escalations flow to your team on an agreed cadence.
Very little. Onboarding is a contact card on the member's existing phone. Your team receives reporting and acts on escalations - the daily engagement work is what the companion takes off their plate.
Role-based access controls and audit logging. Personally identifiable information is protected in accordance with applicable federal and state privacy regulations.
The companion recognizes language that may indicate distress, provides standardized supportive messaging, directs members to appropriate crisis resources, and escalates to your designated team. It does not provide crisis counseling or emergency intervention - clear clinical boundaries are built in.
The chain is straightforward: less loneliness and depression support better chronic disease self management, which reduces avoidable hospital and emergency visits. Utilization and total cost of care are core metrics we track together, with success criteria agreed before launch.
It was built with and for older adults, and designed for Medicaid, Medicare, and dual-eligible members - including those with low digital literacy, limited English, or limited connectivity. It works in urban and rural settings alike.
